The Read
Since the last issue, gold did what the wall warned it would. The 4100 floor broke, price cascaded to 3978, overshot below 4000, then reclaimed to 4017, down 133 on the day. The target we carried all month is hit. The question is no longer how much lower.
While it happened, the bear's engine cracked. WTI broke $70 back to pre-war levels. The 10Y collapsed from 4.50 to 4.398. Breakevens stayed down. Two forces drove gold lower all month, real yields and the dollar, and one of them lost its leg in a single session. The dollar is the last holdout at 101.59.
This is no longer a chase-lower tape. It is a loaded coin-flip into PCE, a gamma squeeze cocked to the upside and a 4000 break to the downside. The macro already leans dovish. Stay flat into the print and let the 4100 line make the call.
The Squeeze · PCE Loading
⚡ Short-cover squeeze, loaded into PCE
Heavy selling knifed price straight down through a thick shelf of resting buyers at 4100 and 4150, and the sellers who chased it under 4000 are now leaning short into a vacuum. Overhead, there is almost no resting supply until 4250–4310. That is the imbalance. Reclaim 4100 and the late sellers are forced to cover into thin air, the buying feeds on itself, and price gets pulled up through the empty zone. We have seen this footprint before. When it resolves, price travels 120 to 225 points.
✓ Heavy resting demand overhead (4100 + 4150 shelf)
✓ Late in the weekly cycle (under 2 days to settle)
✓ Daily ranges blowing out this week
✓ Overhead supply thinning, sellers stepping away
⧗ Buy trigger pending: a soft PCE print Thu
Trigger: buyers reclaim 4100 and hold it for 30 minutes on a soft or in-line print → 4150 → 4225. The down-trade is crowded (the market piled in short as hike odds ran 29% to 68%), so an in-line print pulls buyers back in, and rates already started turning in gold's favor today.
Geopolitics · The Crossover
For three days, de-escalation hurt gold by draining the fear bid. Wednesday it crossed over. The US moved to end Iran's ability to close Hormuz, 11,000 seafarers are exiting under IMO guarantees, and oil broke to pre-war levels near $70. The war premium is gone.
But collapsing oil is disinflation, and disinflation pulls yields down. The same de-escalation pressuring gold's safe-haven bid is now cracking the real-rate leg, the exact thing holding it down. The tail is largely off the board, and the macro tape has started leaning the other way.
The Fed & PCE · The Pivot
Thursday is the decision. May Core PCE lands at 8:30 ET, with a Warsh trimmed-mean read alongside. Consensus looks for core firming and headline near 4.1%, but the ex-oil components are cooling, shelter is softening, and oil has now collapsed. The hawkish trade is crowded at 68% hike odds. When a trade is this one-sided, an in-line print reads as relief. The bond market already front-ran it. Read the release, not the forecast, and watch the supercore line for the tiebreaker.
