The Read

Since the last issue, gold has done what the rate channel demanded. Monday's coil gave way, the 4185 trigger fired, and price round-tripped into the 4100 wall, shedding 73 points to settle at 4129. The real question is not how much lower. It is how much of the move the crowd has already committed to.

Sept-hike odds ran from under 30% to 70% in a week. The dollar closed above 101.14 and confirmed a sustained uptrend. The 10Y firmed back to 4.50, and the move stayed real-rate driven, so gold carried the full opportunity-cost weight with no inflation bid to cushion it. Both legs of the bear are firing at once.

Here is the stress the herd is missing. A confirmed breakdown and a full short book are not the same as easy downside. A hot PCE is largely priced. The pain trade is a soft print, a number able to snap the dollar back and squeeze a one-sided book into 4185, then 4250. This tape rewards patience over the chase.

Geopolitics · Dormant, Not Resolved

Geopolitics has gone quiet as a driver. Talks completed, Iran received a 60-day oil license, Hormuz traffic is recovering, and WTI bled to $73. Supply is back, and returning supply pulls the war premium out of the tape.

Quiet is not the same as resolved. Hormuz reopening and the nuclear question stay open, Lebanon is tense, and one weekend headline brings the fear bid back fast. Treat the calm as borrowed, not earned.

The Fed & PCE · The Pivot

Thursday is the whole week. May Core PCE lands at 8:30 ET, with a Warsh trimmed-mean read alongside it. The asymmetry is the point. Hot confirms a path the market already owns. Soft is the unwind nobody is positioned for. Read the print, not the forecast, and respect which side is crowded.
